Xara Soaring high, away. The summer breeze is blowing my dark, brown hair behind me. Then all I can see is a huge tree branch. The next thing I know I’m falling. Suddenly, everything stops. Nothing… ~~~ “What is it?” I hear, when I start to gain consciousness. My head is spinning and all my bones ache. Something is scalding my skin, so hot, that I can’t even explain. Whenever my kind touches metal of any kind, it scalds us. I wriggle, wincing and trying to get free, but that just makes it worse. Every time the metal touches me, it leaves a long scar on my skin. I painfully open my eyes and see the human species all around me, inspecting my wings under the chains. I get my fire breath ready in case of an emergency. I don’t trust the human species, because of what happened to my family. One of the humans comes over so that he’s a foot away from me. He’s got a white cotton coat on and brown, leather shoes. He’s also got dirty, blonde hair. He’s got a piece of paper and a pen and then he stares at me for a long time. I fold my wings in as tight as I can so that he can’t take notes on me. Then, he looks down at his paper and starts writing down notes. I growl, stubbornly. Then, he takes a short, pointy needle out of his coat pocket and looks ready to inject it into my side. I take a quick inhale and let my flames out, and just like that, he’s ashes. Ha! I think, looking around at these wimpy humans, figuring out who’ll be next. That’s what you get for messing with me. I try to stand up straight, but remember I’m chained to the ground. I pull as hard as I can and...SNAP! the chains are broken. I spread my wings wide, remembering how I always do and push off the ground, except I don’t. “Ohhh!” I scream, feeling myself fall. I feel a sharp jolt of pain and hit the ground. I see an image of my best friend, Kaly. Then, everything goes blank. ~~~ When I wake up once again, I am on the floor of a metal cage. Those freaking humans, again! There’s this weird smell inside this cage as well. I bang on one of the metal bars, enough to make my fist a tinted red and throb ferociously and the metal bend a little. I punch it again and again until my fist is bleeding and there is a break in the metal. Uh yeah, I’m that strong. The metal cage that I am in, is apparently on wheels, and now start to slowly move forward. Where are they taking me? I ask myself. As we are moving forward, I think about my long gone family. They were kidnapped by the humans and killed. They were investigators trying to write about us. After they killed my family, they came out looking for more of our kind. Our kind consists of dragon like creatures that are also half human. They didn’t find any until now. So first my family, and now me! At least Kaly, my best friend hasn’t gotten captured yet. I wonder if she’ll come looking for me. Looking Kaly I fly around our wall, where Xara and I normally meet. I look around the green lush forest and search to see if she’s going to sneak up on me. But she’s not. In fact, she’s not even here. I flap my wings creating more wind around me to lift me up into the air more. Where could she be? I think. Xara never misses anything and it’s not like her to be late. Maybe she had to stop to fight off one of those weird, rabid, pig-like creatures. They’ve been lurking around the island since January and are still at it and it’s June. Just last week, Xara and I found ourselves battling a ton of them. After circling the air for a few minutes, I decide to rest. I skid to a halt at the ground. My feet accidentally stumble and fall out from underneath me. “Ah!” I yell, maybe a little too over dramatic. As I slide across the ground, I think, I need to work on my landings. The dirt around me is unsettled and working up a storm. After I sit up from falling, I pick up a rock and throw it into the stream near me. The island is filled with millions of trees and a few different streams around it. After a long wait, I decide to fly the trail that Xara normally takes. When I get halfway, I stop, because I see a long feather on the ground. I land lightly, pick it up, and examine it. It has blood on the side of it. Then, I look a little closer and see that it’s Xara’s. Oh, God, I think. She’s hurt, and I’ve got to figure out where she is. Trapped Flora Dad always says that I should stay home and watch TV with my brother, whenever he has a case to solve. But, we’re sick and tired of him telling us to go home. I mean, I’m ten and my brother is nine and we should be able to do what we want right? So today, we are standing up for ourselves and going to sneak off to see what this case is all about. As soon as my dad hops in his car, I pull my brother from the couch. “Come on, Kyle. Let’s go.” Ugh,” he moans. “Do we have to, Flora?” “Well, are you coming, scaredy-cat?!” “Fine,” Kyle answers. He gets up and we quickly hustle out the door, just in time to see our dad roll out of the driveway. The ground is hard under my feet as we hop on our bikes and follow our dad’s car. Kyle laughs, throwing his head back. “It’s so funny that we’re just riding our bikes behind our dad’s car like it’s the most normal thing in the world!” The familiar, black chevrolet stops a few feet in front of us.
